About
Julien Hatswell
Surrealist Painter & Sculptor | Canterbury, Kent
Julien Hatswell is a Canterbury-based artist and designer whose creative career spans over three decades. A graduate of KIAD Medway in 1991, Julien began sculpting professionally for a London toy company before launching his own sculpture production business in 1995. His hand-cast cold metal designs—often inspired by Art Nouveau and Gothic styles—have been featured in giftware stores and galleries across the UK, with over 60,000 pieces dispatched from his workshop.
Julien is also a prolific painter, blending surrealism and symbolism across a wide range of themes—from classic Americana to wildlife studies. Working primarily in oils, acrylics, and mixed media, his paintings reflect a deep commitment to experimentation, often embracing the unpredictability of materials to discover “happy accidents.” His iconic Dali-inspired warped clocks and sculptural bottle openers continue to be widely collected.
Julien’s work has been exhibited in solo shows and independent galleries since the early 1990s and is held in private collections around the world.
