Janis Volckman
Contemporary Potter | Sculptural Ceramics with Texture & Form | Based in Kent
Janis Volckman is a Kent-based ceramicist creating sculptural forms that blend functionality with expressive surface texture. Originally from East London, Janis discovered a passion for clay in childhood—digging up earth from the garden to make plates and bowls. Years later, she returned to pottery through adult education and established her own studio in 2019.
Her work is known for its use of piercings, shadow, and matt finishes, often drawing inspiration from natural elements like lichen-covered walls and Kent’s expansive skies. Janis explores colour and surface through hand-built textures and bold glazing, frequently combining different clays and abrasive techniques to create contrast.
Now working under the name Oast House Ceramics, Janis exhibits across the South East, including The Eclectic Art Gallery in Margate, Folkestone Art Gallery, and The Little Studio in Ash.
